Some nerds in California (and to be clear, I love them) legitimately speak English like they’re in a poorly dubbed anime ...and I am wondering now if the causality might run the other way around. Is “badly” dubbed anime actually well-made to sound like nerds...? 😮🤯
A nuanced, valuable thing I’m getting out of my time in Berkeley/SF is getting to hear the small talk and witness the micro-interactions between people. It helps me better contextualize what I see on Twitter, particularly as someone from halfway across the planet
What are these nuances? I think the 1st thing is that a lot of people are softer & shiftier IRL. It’s one of those things that I kinda believe but was not super certain about, but I’m increasingly more certain. This is universal I think. People are tentative, revise in real time
Another generally interesting thing is... everyone is so nice. The level of friendly positive small talk between strangers is like 10x more than in SG, it seems like. I imagine this must make socially awkward people feel 10x worse. It’s probably less bad to be awkward in SG 🤔
