Has anybody done a blogpost or thread about Japanese animes & games where the villains have a certain... Christian aesthetic? 4 games come to mind: Breath of Fire 2, Bayonetta, Final Fantasy XIII, and Devil May Cry. I feel like there’s a “the Church is secretly evil” vibe https://t.co/SExhfJC2Ux

In Breath of Fire 2, the game begins with a confusing, distressing experience – and you learn later on that, while you were away, your entire town was brainwashed by demons masquarading as agents of God. In this Universe, Gods get their power from believers and spectacle https://t.co/cOptYK914d

In Final Fantasy XIII, Galenth / Barthandelus is a Pope-like figure who turns out to be, of course, a weird sociopath who’s actually motivated to destroy all of existence to meet the REAL God(?). FF13 is a mess, plot-wise, but the message in the aesthetics is pretty clear IMO https://t.co/JrKQa6ApLS

I just learned about Sanctus in Devil May Cry, who’s... another Pope-y fellow. He is deceptive, manipulative, sadistic, power-hungry... again, the story might not make sense but the message in the aesthetics is pretty clear https://t.co/VbgUV4yEuM
