I was in the mood for beer, and usually my favorite go-to beer is Kronenberg (which I'll probably do a thread on when I'm drinking it next), but for some reason earlier I felt like buying a Tiger – one of SG's local beers that happens to have gone international. What's the story? https://t.co/UHrq7INHvp

Amazingly (to me), Tiger Beer doesn't have an english Wikipedia page of its own. There's a page for it in Dutch (I hit the translate button), which is an odd fact. SG has a *very* active Wikipedian community so I'm surprised they haven't made a page for our #1 (I'm assuming) beer https://t.co/mkouqOwBbW

A friend @bluebirdalert was a history major who did a whole academic paper on Tiger Beer ads in 1930s. As she points out, nobody in SG really *loves* Tiger beer. It's just... a staple. Soldiers drink it in the army. It's just... everywhere around you https://t.co/6AY28PaSoW https://t.co/Z7O6tNYehZ

Segue to relive a famous ad from the 90s – What Time Is It? It's Tiger Time! Interesting now to notice the use of soldiers in the ad– I think I definitely think of my army days when I decide on a Tiger. People used to jokingly say "It's Tiger time" when someone asked the time https://t.co/zFdHjhD9ic

Just a couple of more ads – this one from about 6-7 years ago leans into a sort of "exotic Asian" vibe, with some cyberpunk-y dark neon elements – this was actually ahead of the more widespread dark-vaporwave trends that are now about 3-4 years old. This feels more HK than SG tbh https://t.co/JpfPrrvbNS

And this most recent one appeals to the latest class of artistic, creative, driven Singaporeans who are eager to break free from the cages of their boring Asian parents. The Tiger now as a representation of independence and freedom https://t.co/lizi9EUgMB
