This got me thinking about people’s value systems - and the idea “depressed about” In tandem, I’m also thinking about that SG Chinese girl who went to Germany and asked “you think you’re superior? How? In what fucking way? Are you more educated? Are you richer?” https://t.co/0IyXy6g0Ke

Also related is a point Aella brought up: if everyone around you is abused in the same way, and thinks it’s perfectly normal, would you feel traumatised? (Junger’s observations in Tribe suggest that it’s *easier* to cope with the *consequences* of abuse if it’s normalized)

“What are they depressed about” I think is indicative of an interestingly simplistic and tidy worldview. If bad things happen to you then you’re sad, if good things happen to you then you’re happy, and that’s all there is to it. This seems to be how lots of people actually are

This worldview strikes me as something adjacent to the belief that the world is intrinsically just. It does seem temptingly simple - but there’s always a trade-off, isn’t there? 🤔 this view requires the world around you to remain fairly stable, consistent, predictable, reliable

The idea that you’ll be less depressed if you make more money, have more material success, even get better grades, etc - all can seem fairly innocuous within a personal worldview. But when you extrapolate from that, the implications for everyone else are kinda dicey

I think most people deal with this by not thinking about it https://t.co/maelMARGuR

R&M fall onto a sentient alien to break their fall, killing them instantly. You can see looks of shock and horror on the other aliens’ faces - the death is not without cost. Rick’s advice would be to not think about it. But I think the audience is supposed to think about it https://t.co/cbwj3s9FGH

This is tough to articulate, *deep breath* In some (many?) cases it seems like depression, apart from the brain chemistry bits, is a discordant disengagement with value systems themselves, rather than dissatisfaction with the relative stats you have based on your circumstances

More intuitively: People think depression is like being upset with the hand you’ve been dealt, rather than feeling like you don’t want to play at all, almost regardless of the hand you have Multiple Nobel winners have committed suicide over the years, correlated w depression https://t.co/qdp1s9Dzxd

I think what bums out a lot of people who force themselves to get good at playing some games is discovering that then you only get validation, approval etc (and also envy, hate) as a consequence of your gaming skill rather than who you are as a person

The implicit notion that waitressing is bad or shameful might seem like a useful tool that you can use to put down your ideological opponents, but it's a radioactive idea – simply holding on to it will make you sick https://t.co/4chM4YC14d
