Iām rewatching Rick and Morty, hereās a thread about what I like about the show. S1E1 opens with a drunk Rick dragging Morty out of bed into a home-made spaceship and a plan to destroy the Earth and repopulate it... and then Rick passes out, cue intro... then family breakfast https://t.co/MdeZy88GeK

At school, Morty is getting bullied by Frank. Rick shows up, freezes Frank and drags Morty off. āShouldnāt you unfreeze Frank?ā āIāll do it later.ā Mortyās sister Summer sees Frank and fantasizes about a future together before he falls and smashes into pieces https://t.co/haOhkeNKp4

Itās the first on-screen death in the show - but Summer doesnāt even get to finish screaming before it cuts to their mom Beth, at work, operating on a heartās horse. We learn sheās a badass, and her husband is a weak, selfish, dismissive minnow of a man. R&M goes hard on this https://t.co/auTb95YDcA

In another dimension, Morty is feeling a little apprehensive about being... in another dimension. Rick proceeds to give him a pep talk before immediately revealing himself to be a completely irresponsible adult. This is the unfair, abusive burden Rick constantly puts on Morty https://t.co/aMHAECqISm

Sequence of events: - Rick gives Morty special shoes to walk down a cliff but neglects to tell him how to turn it on - Morty falls and breaks both legs - Rick travels to an advanced future dimension to get a broken-bone-recovery-serum for Morty

- Rick, being old in a dimension where everyoneās young, was apparently very attractive to women in that dimension, and he spent a lot of time with them - upon returning to Morty, his interdimensional portal gun has run out of juice - they now need to go through customs, and... https://t.co/rBg2C8BkbJ

Meanwhile back at thereās the school thereās continuity with the frozen student death - the show doesnāt just kill people, it makes sure you realize that their deaths have consequences. This happens at all sorts of scales in all sorts of ways that I personally find compelling https://t.co/7O5OCaUM6i

Rick again with the brazen double-standards; this is a recurring theme throughout the show. His abuse is staring you right in the face from episode 1 https://t.co/KG0nQcMJAI

In the chase sequence - this happens in a matter of *seconds* - Morty inhales some green alien gas. He coughs out some goop, which appears to grow into a child, then a sentient adult, then dies, all in a matter of seconds. Rick tells Morty not to think about it. Life/death theme https://t.co/7uRkTw4MbB

R&M fall onto a sentient alien to break their fall, killing them instantly. You can see looks of shock and horror on the other aliensā faces - the death is not without cost. Rickās advice would be to not think about it. But I think the audience is supposed to think about it https://t.co/cbwj3s9FGH

Morty doesnāt want to hurt anybody. But Rick manipulates Morty into shooting the guards by telling him that theyāre robots - and then subsequently by saying that ārobotsā was a figure of speech - Rick thinks itās OK to kill them because theyāre bureaucrats unworthy of respect https://t.co/gO2lTyjJ64

During the firefight you can see Morty accidentally killing a civilian, and when he kills one of the guards, you can see his buddy recoil in sadness. These bits happen in seconds; if you blink youāll miss it. I really appreciate this. every death has consequences https://t.co/HgrvfkFKVs

The episode ends with Rick promising to be honest with the family (immediately before lying to Summer about the dead student), and then Rick manipulating + abusing Morty - whoās convulsing on the floor from the alien seeds Rick forced him to put inside his rectum. Mortyās fucked https://t.co/ogYTMy9N8V

In S1E2 - Rick makes the family dog sentient, then brings Morty into his math teacherās dreams to incept the idea that Morty should get an A. A dream within a dream leads them into some sort of elaborate sex dungeon - another layer, nightmare zone https://t.co/5j0SrFVk5H

The dog (slave named Snuffles, now named Snowball) gains sentience, learns about domestication, and gets understandably upset. He puts the family in a cage and threatens Jerry with castration https://t.co/PU0nA5PsPc

The Monster, Scary Terry, goes home to his wife and kid. She asks him about his day, he snaps at her. The baby cries. āOut there,ā she says. āNot in here.ā Scary Terry apologises!! This is what I love about this show. Minor characters experience + manage conflict with such nuance https://t.co/L1G3GKPMZu

Next we go into Scary Terryās nightmare - heās at school, late for class, and heās got no pants on. Rick and Morty stand up for him, and give him pants. Again, in a matter of seconds, such a fully fleshed out little story of standing up to bullies https://t.co/izqswEBpPt

Scary Terry gets them out of the dream, and they return to find sentient cyborg dogs have taken over. We then go into Snowballās dream, where Morty is dying. Snowball is willing to give it all up for his human. āWould they do the same for us?ā āWE ARE NOT THEM.ā š¢ https://t.co/MgCLDXZPgk

Again this is what I love about the show. Iām not a fan of Rick, heās a manipulative, abusive piece of trash. What I like is the framing; the focus, the appreciation that there are entire universes in the little cracks of everything, and that itās all incredibly fragile&fleeting https://t.co/iWsllWu29M
