There’s something very interesting to me about the pandemic of boys playing video games at the expense of almost everything else https://t.co/lXn28ubDbK

Like, jokes and grievances aside, I think there is some real truth here about the real differences between men and women, broadly speaking. There was a Chris Rock joke that went something like, “if women would fuck n*ggas in a cardboard box, the property market would collapse”

There is some needless gatekeeping that keeps women and girls out of certain male-dominated domains. That said, if and when we completely eliminate those hurdles, I believe boys will still be different from girls https://t.co/oLrBEurxgL

Women like sports and violence and games too, and they have every right to like what they like and enjoy etc. That said the distribution of boy interests and girl interests, even if you could somehow account for culture and socialising, I think will be different

As a species, the way we’ve been managing gender relations and the differences between genders has been so clunky, clumsy, abrasive and dumb that I think sometimes we overcompensate and pretend there are *no* differences between genders; which is itself clumsy and dumb in a way

The public spaces in which these conversations happen are so heavy with the weight of past failures and injustices that it’s very difficult to have a sincere, good-faith discussion about it. Private face-to-face conversations about this are much more nuanced & thoughtful

A common way this leads to confusion is via the complicated idea of “equality”. “Gender equality” (I don’t like the phrase) IMO is abt women being treated with respect as equally human, not abt equal outcomes for all. Forcing equal outcomes can be Procrustean w weird consequences

It also unfortunately makes feminists sometimes look like hypocrites when they seem to ask for equality in one area and not in another - but the reason for that is bc the premise is all wrong, “absolute equality” is unachievable + undesirable (this is so easy to misinterpret...)

I suspect that the way out is to demonstrate that expecting equal outcomes when the starting conditions are so radically different is a sort of ignorance. “What if the genders were reversed” is often not a useful argument because the contexts are often totally different

Again I find myself thinking a lot of this would be alleviated if we had more women-written, women-directed stories in mainstream media... though unfortunately a lot of guys still gloss over this as “women’s stuff”. Women’s stuff is human stuff and it’s the more fascinating half

This is fantastic!!! watch this, my dudes. really watch it, properly, seriously https://t.co/tWASTKhJsH
