One of the coping mechanisms I have as a weirdo misfit is having conversations with my past and future selves, via writing. I'm very amused and impressed with past Depressed Visa(s) for taking selfies and posting them on IG – he knew I would look back and reflect on them https://t.co/Kl5gdem0L4

@Tipsycaek @sonyaellenmann storytime: I've posted to Instagram 971 times so far. 2 of them are 'depression selfies'. Did I enjoy being sad? Was I happy in these pictures, or at some meta level? fuck no, I was miserable as shit & wanted to die. But on retrospect I love that I took these https://t.co/lDdZSE7EGf

This was my way of telling myself "i'm tired + sad as fuck, you fucker, & I'm going about my daily life all the same so that we can survive & be OK. I hope you remember this and do something about it." Years later I'm in this relaxed headspace; I have time to face it + think

I think I was depressed at the time coming to terms with the bleak banality of my reality – having spent a couple of dreary years eking out a living and seeing decades of the same ahead of me. David Foster Wallace described this very well in his This Is Water commencement speech https://t.co/aiy9AQdiVY

I listened to a lot of Elliott Hulse & Alan Watts, & they helped me be a little less neurotic, self-centered, all-up-in-my-head. Reflecting on it now, I'm also thinking abt false advertising. I remember thinking, "nobody quite warned me it was going to be this bad, not like this"

Alan Watts really changed my life when I was inhibitingly depressed around 2014/2015. Life just seemed so bleak - even with a job I liked and a wife I loved, existence seemed like a jail sentence. Alan helped me see that it was funny, in a hearty and nourishing way https://t.co/QazobK21GF

25. there are 2 thoughts that convince me not to ragequit and delete my account a. the red washing down the bathtub can't change the color of the sea – ie nobody will remember or care. there are more creative, fun ways to express your disdain b. I haven't seen tomorrow's memes https://t.co/IknR4RwzEF

@visakanv Sometimes I think we should all read/listen to that every week. Every time I hear it I’m impacted; and yet it’s so easy to slip back to the default.
