In the comments someone says "The only person you should be holding accountable for the way you see yourself is YOU. Period." I can see how this is a sort of noble-ish, "take radical self-responsibility for yourself and your life" gesture but it also dismisses social reality https://t.co/Zw6igmT7lk

everybody should independently decide to take more responsibility for themselves – but this does not in any way change the fact that we live in a world that's carefully designed, tested and optimized to extract $$ from us at all costs

when does the self that you are begin? how is it constructed, how is it authored? what are the building blocks that you use to develop your sense of self, that self that's accountable to YOU, the YOU that YOU are? where do those building blocks come from? https://t.co/fqBgyVqRW4

Humans are susceptible to influence, and this is not something we can get rid of by being in denial about it. If you bombard a person with marketing, with sugar and salt, with tits and ass, with outrage and scandal, they will have to actively expend energy to resist it

Watch “Thank You For Smoking”. The PR folks selling the most destructive things are masters of palatability. Weapon manufacturers use gender equality and inclusivity to market themselves. Sellers of tobacco and alcohol and guns are masters of talking about Freedom!! To consume. https://t.co/1ET9w6XgEj
