@qntm @MeFromBefore "But doctor," the man cries, "I barely have time to say one thing and hear your response!"
"Solution is simple," the doctor says. "Stay in the time loop until you become the world's most efficient communicator. Let's hope the skill transfers."
"But doctor," the man cries,
"control" is a chimera
you dont control anything ever. rather, you harmonize your will with something and the resultant volitional vector has a component parallel to a reasonable approximation of your original intent
For practical purposes, language is an evolutionarily novel symbiote prone to opportunistic parasitism.
To put it bluntly, we're communicating via piranha-descended babelfish that chomp on your brain if you let your guard down.
To sum up, we seem to have a century's worth of respiratory infections in circulation and there's a possibility that this viral load is contributing to the global decline in testosterone. If anyone knows of any evidence to support or disconfirm this, I'd like to hear it.
I'm privately testing a hypothesis about male pattern baldness. The preliminary results look discouraging and at this rate the hypothesis will be falsified within a year.
My hypothesis is "you can't just decide to grow your hair back."
@nosilverv @RichDecibels long term compatibility is largely a matter of transformative potential so sufficiently deep mutual openness *is* compatibility in an important sense
superficial openness not so much
Suddenly I glimpse it. The philosopher's stone, the holy grail, whatever you wanna call it.
I can almost grasp it.
just one more transformation bro I swear I need to transcend one more level let me awaken just one more time I swear I'll break thru this time
the tragedy of the commons
externalities
Goodhart's law
the principal-agent problem
the alignment problem
you guys realize these all point to the same underlying cause, right?
Premise 1: Civilization is a learning network.
Premise 2: Learning networks need perturbations in order to escape local optima.
Reasoning step: *gut-wrenching realization*
Conclusion: The metacrisis had to happen.
Okay, so. We know nonneural cognition plays a role in development, to the point we just can just *talk* to the embryo bioelectrically to change its target morphology and it figures out the necessary engineering choices on the fly.
@tiredgenerally Gods were originally low-fidelity uploads of specific individuals, running distributed on the minds and interactions of the believing groups, synchronized and maintained by shared rituals and myths.
The crazy part? I think I have a plausible causal model.
looks like tpot is noticing the ambient lack of capacity to understand second order effects, and noticing that this is a problem
i dont think ive watched a metaentity mature before
Language-derived thought maps to the rest of mental space as rigid, narrow and far-reaching. It is as bones for the mind.
For bones to do their proper job, they need flesh around them: embodied understanding and rich experience. Mere thinking won't provide that.
@eshear best i can tell transient stressors like this have a "what fires together wires together" type thing going but for the whole body including the brain. embodiment training on the neurosomatic level
I now believe @drmichaellevin's work implies a startlingly high lower bound on the nonneural cognitive capacity of the animal body - and if it were possible to access that capacity, the training would bear a striking resemblance to known spiritual practices.
Somebody stop me.
@post_alchemist If anything Searle's Chinese room is an argument for the possibility that humans could be components of larger cognitive systems without being aware of what's going on in the "minds" of those systems.
@eigenrobot sounds like an unfortunate situation, ousted from their homeland and unwelcome abroad. maybe they should get smart and trade that militancy for more amicable modes of influence, like culture and finance
@nosilverv i had a period of incredibly drastic learning coincide with a life situation where my behaviors were very tightly (if voluntarily) constrained
i'm starting to see how people get the idea that their life trajectories must have been planned by some greater agency
A healthy social field can easily accommodate awkward people. If a person entering the field appears as a lemur they're manifesting an existing defect, not introducing it.
an llm driven game where you are someones inner monologue. by default they attempt to perform actions you call, your speech influences the characters development and you can try to prompt engineer game events directly, like a form of magic. whos building this
i take the recent kerfuffle around @repligate as some evidence that doomerism is at least partly motivated by a felt need for legible assurances in a domain where they are hard (and plausibly impossible) to come by
@eigenrobot claim checks out
didn't interact with children much before wife got pregnant, suddenly got very interested in the future of society after she did
cool they found a way to establish algae have nonzero cognition
this is basic research in a field that has barely existed before due to lack of theory & methodology. we are so so early https://t.co/BzeIHqCVSy
