a few days ago i took a medium dose of acid and wrote for several hours straight and admitted some things to myself, mostly about money let's start here: last august my mom gave me $100,000 for my birthday. i resented her for this and also suppressed the resentment

@QiaochuYuan Thanks for your openness! There's a lot of good stuff here that's making me think about my own relationship with money & my parents It can be easy to get into "objectify"/comparison mode when thinking about money and this thread probs isn't helpful to people that are doing that

@QiaochuYuan thanks a lot for sharing QC i’m curious to know if you have any thoughts on this proposition that’s been rolling around in my head for a while and seems relevant: “any adult who is capable of taking care of themself ought to take care of themself.”

@QiaochuYuan true, most all of the words and phrases i consider to describe what I have in mind are pretty loaded, we could dance around meanings for a while. maybe eli5 gets to the heart of it: “for the good of society, if you can make enough money to take care of yourself, you should.”

@strangestloop the word "can" is still doing a lot of work here (also "should"). there's really a lot wrapped up in the question of what it means to say you can or can't do something. like, to be explicit, it's not at all clear whether i "can" hold down a full-time job

@strangestloop i don't have any physical disabilities preventing me from doing that but i do have... uh... a lot of trouble being a productive employee, in my experience. am in some sense disabled? should i be treated as such? no idea

@QiaochuYuan agreed on “can,” that can shift around as well based on factors like environment, illness, person-job fit your employee troubles are really surprising to me, though of course i’m operating off of not that much information - your podcasts with eigen mostly

@QiaochuYuan Thank you for writing this. The funniest thing about all the QTs saying they hate you while asking you for $$$ is that they all have the same neuroses and resentments around money but not the self-awareness to recognize and work on them.
